Fans were getting excited about the third installment of the Spider-Verse series, recently titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Significant delays have sent fans into a frenzy, though. Originally due for March 2024, the film has been pulled from Sony’s release schedule without notice of a new date. Insiders suggest the film’s “creative reasons” have seen an extreme rewrite of the movie, potentially pushing the release two or even three years further.

Film insider Jeff Sneider said a lot of the film had been junked, and though the production team was blindsided, everyone was pleased for more time to get the project just right. Of course, these delays were further hit by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, notably the SAG-AFTRA strike, which delayed the recording of key voice actor dialogue.

There have also been rumored tensions between Sony and Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller, particularly over budget issues for the spin-off series Spider-Noir, which has not been renewed. Quickly, however, both Lord and Miller shot down rumors that much of Beyond the Spider-Verse had been scrapped. “Nothing has been scrapped,” said Miller via X (formerly Twitter), reassuringly telling fans “The reels are coming along nicely.”

Claims of production issues were further discredited by Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton, who cast doubt on the idea that the online rumors were very accurate. “Would you ever believe there could sometimes be stuff on the internet that might not always be particularly accurate?” Pemberton said, implying doubt on the severity of the delays that were reported.

Reassurances notwithstanding, the Spider-Verse franchise has come under fire in the past regarding its production environment. A Vulture report in June this year said that nearly 100 animators exited production on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse due to unsustainable work conditions – note those really long hours and extensive revisions. Producer Amy Pascal said, “Yeah, the animation part is really brutal. The story is what it’s all about, and that story, sometimes it takes a revision, a revision, a revision.”.

With Beyond the Spider-Verse still deep in development, it’s presumed that this extra time will pay off with a worthy follow-up to the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse. A new release date has not yet been scheduled, though there seems a resolve on the part of the creatives to get it right for both critics and audiences.
