Delhi Ganesh, the veteran Tamil actor, expired at the age of 80 years in Chennai after a prolonged illness. He had a unique screen presence and all-important contribution to Tamil cinema. The end of an era indeed. His career has crossed more than four decades, with over 400 films to his credits, he earned high applause for versatility and commitment to the craft.
One of the oldest and to-date still going idols in Tamil cinema is actor Delhi Ganesh. His film career began way back in 1976, in the making of K. Balachander’s Pattina Pravesam. His repertoire includes landmark films such as Sindhu Bhairavi, Nayakan, and Michael Madana Kama Rajan, which spotlights everything from a comedian to an emotional and sensitive character. He was known for playing middle-class characters who were relatable to all ages.
Apart from his success in Tamil cinema, Delhi Ganesh selected Telugu and Malayalam films with his characteristic flavor. He is also famous for his work on Tamil television, which has reached millions of viewers in the State because of his smooth, effortless portrayal of simple characters. On both the small and big screen and stage, he earned critical recognition and several awards, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award in 1979, and the Kalaimamani Award in 1994.
Delhi Ganesh’s death has prompted an avalanche of tributes on social media. Fans and colleagues recall him as a grounded artist, humble and gentle. His son Maha Devan confirmed the news of his father’s death and thanked everyone for the tremendous support and condolences.
