Alex Jones‘s Infowars media empire will be acquired by The Onion, a satirical news outlet, which will support major rebranding efforts as the acquisition takes control away from Alex Jones’s media outlet, Infowars, which represents the platform for conspiracy theories and his controversial claims.
Jones wrote on social media that bankruptcy trustees running the U.S. bankruptcy case consummated the sale. He condemned the sale, which was started in an attempt to pay off judgments from several defamation lawsuits that have set free-speech warriors down on their knees. Settlements based on those lawsuits will be paid for by proceeds of the sale, and those settlements were obtained by the families of several of the children killed at Sandy Hook as the result of a defamation lawsuit filed after Jones repeatedly said that the 2012 mass shooting there was fake.
According to a statement issued by The Onion, it aims to turn Infowars into a satirical reporting news agency. As part of the transaction, intellectual property over Infowars, its website, and production machinery was sold. It is interesting to note that The Onion will launch a partnership with the anti-gun-violence group Everytown for Gun Safety, which will turn out to be the only advertiser of its newly launched platform.
This purchase is about accountability, Sandy Hook families’ attorney Chris Mattei said. “It ensures that Jones cannot profit off of lies that cause immeasurable pain,” he added.
On his part, Jones condemns the sale, saying this will find new outlets to continue its work. For the families of the victims, the victims of Sandy Hook see this purchase as a step toward justice in the fact that the media needs accountability.
