On October 31, 2020, a small town woke up to the horror. Livye Lewis, 19 years old, was found dead with a bullet shot in her car on a rural road. The ex-boyfriend, Matthew Edgar, was discovered nearby dazed and disoriented but claimed to have no memory of what happened that night.
The investigation would unravel the final hours of Lewis’ life and paint a tense pre-Halloween party where Edgar, Lewis, and his ex-wife, Montana Bockel, crossed paths. Witnesses say Edgar became angry after overhearing Lewis’ plans to stay elsewhere that night.
By 3:34 a.m., chilling text messages surfaced. Edgar ominously replied “Dead” when asked about Lewis’ whereabouts. Hours later, her lifeless body was found, with a rifle by her side that was linked to the fatal gunshot.
Edgar, initially on bail, absconded in the middle of his trial in January 2022. The manhunt followed his in-absentia conviction. It took nearly a year for the man to be captured near his grandparents’ place in December 2022.
Edgar was formally sentenced to 99 years for the murder of Lewis on January 3, 2023. Tonight’s episode of “48 Hours” will feature this gruesome case, as it goes deep into the tragedy and the quest for justice for Livye Lewis.
