President-elect Donald Trump vowed Sunday to make public classified documents about the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy (JFK), Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Addressing a rally in Washington Sunday on his victory, Trump mentioned days ahead when he would publish the records as part of government transparency.
Trump, back at the White House for a second, non-consecutive term, highlighted his administration’s focus on reversing the “over-classification” of crucial historical documents. “As a first step toward restoring transparency, we will release the remaining records on JFK, RFK, and MLK,” he told a packed Capital One Arena, drawing loud applause.
This is not the first time Trump has dealt with the matter. He partially declassified documents related to JFK’s assassination in 1963 during his first term under the Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act but withheld some files citing national security concerns after pressure from the CIA and the FBI.
The murders of JFK in 1963, RFK in 1968, and MLK in 1968 are still today subjects of public fascination and cynicism. Official probes determined that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in JFK’s murder, but millions of Americans believe in a larger conspiracy. Trump did not specify which files would be released or whether all documents would be declassified.
The announcement of Trump coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and his scheduled inauguration. Further, Trump appointed Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of JFK, to head the Health and Human Services. This move made the connection with his agenda more vivid.
As Trump gets ready to assume his office, promising to bring forth revelations about these past events, controversies and eagerness for the people of America are gaining momentum once again.
