At the Americans For Prosperity Gala at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night, President-elect Donald Trump said he would appoint North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to lead the Department of the Interior. “The big announcement, said Trump, is a person with much expertise in natural resources and regulatory reform.”

He’s going to head the Department of Interior. He’s going to be fantastic, Trump said while adding that Burgum’s background as a tech entrepreneur and two-term governor makes him the perfect candidate for this role. Praises from Trump came for Burgum’s commitment to reducing inefficiencies in regulations, fighting bureaucratic corruption, and protecting children from wrong policies.”We’re going to clean out the corrupt, broken, and failing bureaucracies,” he said in his speech.

Energy independence and resource management were signature themes of Burgum’s underdog campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2023, but he also brought deep experience from the energy industry. After having appeared in several GOP presidential debates, however, Burgum dropped out of the race last December and quickly after endorsed Trump. He has been a powerful advocate for the president-elect ever since, attending campaign events and making media appearances to promote Trump’s policies.

Trump had narrowed down his list to Burgum for vice president but has since chosen Senator JD Vance of Ohio to be the vice president. Putting Burgum at the Interior meshes with the broader goals of the administration, placing further strength on U.S. dominance in terms of energy while making regulatory procedures clearer. Speaking in one of his latest remarks, Burgum has said that the victory of Trump will “ensure America’s dominance in energy,” which he perceives as being imperative to diplomatic relations worldwide.

Burgum will officially assume the post on Friday and will likely outline his intentions for the Department of the Interior and Trump’s policy toward energy and environment issues in the new administration.
