President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Senator Marco Rubio of Florida for the position of next U.S. Secretary of State. This move truly underlines the strong commitment of the administration to foreign policy dedicated to international assertiveness regarding China and Israel, among others.
Rubio, being a Cuban descendant, will most likely receive praise for his hardline stance against international threats, particularly regarding his views on China and Iran. Rubio would become the very first Hispanic American ever to hold America’s top diplomatic post if he gets the nod.
Trump believed Rubio to be a great leader: “a powerful voice for freedom and someone who will champion America’s interests abroad.” He thanked his voters who had nominated him, promising to put U.S. security first and bring peace to the world with President Trump’s help.
A longtime senator with a seat on the Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio has been notable for his fervor for Israel and continually shown advocacy for a strong U.S. This nominee responds not only to Middle Eastern foes but also to Latin American ones. His appointment reflects an ongoing and non-stop shift from a softer foreign policy approach in the Trump administration to a stronger and more aggressive foreign policy approach toward international conflicts and threats.
Despite his lousy record against Trump in the 2016 Republican primaries, where Trump famously tagged him “Little Marco,” Trump and Rubio have now buried the hatchet, and Rubio stands to be an important allied figure for the 2024 campaign.
Thus, the appointment of Rubio as Secretary of State by Trump demonstrates the interest on the latter’s side to park U.S. diplomacy with a firm hand on the world stage and, preference for strength and stability in international relations.
