Former Soros Fund Management executive and hedge fund manager Scott Bessent has been nominated by President Donald Trump as the new U.S. Treasury Secretary. Bessent is known for his pro-deregulation, low-tax policies, and strong support for cryptocurrency at a time when debates over the future of the U.S. economy remain ongoing.
He is chief investment officer for Soros Fund Management, investing in European territory, a position he has held for eight years. Bessent is an old hand in the financial world and also sees himself playing a key role in advising Trump during his presidential campaign, raising great amounts of funding for his bid. Bessent has worked closely with George Soros, but his appointment is a significant change for an administration that has positioned itself often as outside the establishment and opposed to the Soros of this world.
While some politicians attacked Bessent’s ties with Soros and accused his appointment of inconsistency with Trump’s populist rhetoric, others looked to the appointment as a strategic maneuver to deregulate and tax-reform approach to spur the economy forward. His record of successful bets in finance also includes the infamous bet against the British pound during the currency crisis in 1992, causing markets to speculate about his appointment by reacting positively.
However, observers have not failed to notice the glaring inconsistency of Trump’s campaign promises to “drain the swamp” by promoting one of Soros’ closest friends into such a high office. Regardless of mixed responses, Bessent’s confirmation is likely going to usher in an excellent period in Trump’s economic policy for the United States.
