One government-operated website, reproductiverights.gov, containing vital information regarding reproductive health and abortion access, went offline within hours of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Launched in 2022 by the Biden administration, this website intended to offer patients the legal avenues to access birth control, their rights, and all avenues to seek abortions under current law.

The website included a message for those going dark, saying that abortion is legal in many states even though Roe v. Wade was overturned. It also pointed out that Mifepristone, used in medication abortions, is FDA-approved and safe when used properly. The platform further clarified reproductive health services that fall under most insurance policies, including birth control, prenatal care, and cancer screenings.

In an initial stance, he spoke of legal abortion but with serious restrictions, while he has also argued against abortion, stating it’s time to ‘make families strong’ so that it is less of a necessity.

CBS News poll shows that most Americans favor legal abortion in all or most cases. On the other hand, with 12 states enforcing total abortion bans and others introducing restrictions, access to reproductive health services is still a contentious issue nationwide.

This reflects the larger trend of policies in reproductive health care and has also underlined the controversy over abortion rights in the U.S.
