UK MI6 and US Intelligence Chiefs(CIA)
In a rare joint statement, the chiefs of Britain’s MI6 and America’s CIA warned that the international order is under unprecedented threat, akin to the Cold War era. They pointedly warned of the “devastating” ongoing war in Ukraine, where both of their countries have visibly been involved in efforts to counter Russian aggression. UK-US cooperation continued to be underlined as essential by the respective intelligence chiefs Sir Richard Moore and William Burns.
In a rare first, the two chiefs of intelligence agencies wrote an article in the Financial Times together in which they gave vent to their apprehensions. They said the war in Ukraine, which was initiated by Russia in February 2022, is still a big challenge. The article underlined the role of intelligence in warning the world about the incident and abetted Ukraine by declassifying information.
This collaboration goes beyond Ukraine as they try to disrupt the operations of Russian intelligence in Europe, adding to the growing tensions in the Israel-Gaza War. They also referred to the rise of China as a focal point of geopolitical concern that requires reordering intelligence priorities.
Appearing at the FT Weekend Festival in London, the intelligence chiefs emphasized the need for patience over further support for Ukraine. They acknowledged that escalation is possible, but bellicosity from Moscow should be resisted. Speaking for himself, Mr. Burns remembered a ‘gut-wrenching’ moment in 2022 when the possibility of Russia’s application of tactical nuclear weapons would be very real.
Both of them also reaffirmed their commitment to global security, emphasizing the appeal for innovation in war technology and for not further destabilizing Europe and the Middle East.
