Director Vasan Bala has taken the entire blame for the poor box office performance of Jigra, a thriller-drama featuring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina. The film released on 11th October 2024 garnered only $2.64 million despite having hardly any competition it had to face during its first week of release.
The director reflected on how his film was received in a recent Indian media interview and pointed out that audiences failed to connect with the film. At the same time, Alia Bhatt’s “lowest box-office opener”, in that sense, Vasan Bala was sorry he didn’t give audiences something more successful to be connected with.
“Something has happened where people stayed away,” Vasan Bala said, adding with this film, it was his job as the director to bring them to the theatre. He feels it is his responsibility, considering how he was entrusted with the project so that the great filmmaker Satish Kaushik can have satisfaction.
Earlier, Bala had said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Jigra was a globally emotional film and claimed he was surprised that it failed. He was also candid about the fact that he disappointed producers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt.
Amid cyber criticism, Bala reportedly deactivated his X account after being called ‘arrogant’ for defending the film instead of fully accepting its shortcomings. Even with a solid cast and the support of Dharma Productions and Eternal Sunshine Productions, Jigra could not fetch audiences to cinema halls.
