The skies were crystal clear in South Florida, ideal for stargazers, providing an awesome view of the crescent moon. Added to this was Venus shining under the moon with a bright radiance that had captivated the attention of many and made conversations through social media channels.
Astrologers describe this phenomenon as a “planet parade,” as the moon appears aligned with the visible planets. During January 17 and 18, Saturn might also be seen with Venus. The Waxing Crescent Moon added its silvery glow to the brilliance of Venus, an unforgettable celestial couple.
This was not a spectacle of Florida exclusivity since, for example, UK-based observers also witnessed the rare spectacle. The beauty of the Venus-Moon cosmic conjunction was appropriately photographed by members of the Watford Observer Camera Club.
In a few months, the western sky will be dominated once again by the “Evening Star,” Venus, which will become even more available for stargazing as the planet reaches its greatest elongation from the sun on January 9 or 10.
This celestial showcase comes on the heels of the Quadrantids meteor shower, which peaked on January 4 with up to 120 meteors per hour. Despite the moon’s light slightly dimming the fainter meteors, the shower provided an additional treat for skywatchers.
Astronomy fans suggest that to fully enjoy the events, it would be best to go to a dark, open place. Since Venus is visible for weeks, it gives stargazers ample time to appreciate the radiant beauty along with the phases of the moon.
These alignments are spectacular, but they exist only from Earth’s point of view, which reminds us that we live in a vast, dynamic universe.
