In a statement, the PCB announced on Sunday that former Test cricketer Wahab Riaz will be the supervisor for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Another commendable work in his post-retirement career has been entrusted to Riaz, who provided him with a role as the head of the mentoring team for the Champions Cup.
This is after the PCB recalled Wahab Riaz from his position as Pakistan’s chief selector. This was done after the team’s pathetic display in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where it was not even on the list at the group stage level. The PCB restructured the strategies and key people involved after this event.
The PCB also confirmed a second day of talks over Mohammad Yousaf’s future as NCA batting coach. His resignation continues to be considered and is still not finalized.
On August 16, 2023, Abdul Wahab Riaz ended a 15-year-long playing career by resigning from international cricket. He first stepped onto the field against Zimbabwe in February 2008 and went on to play 27 Tests and 36 T20 Internationals along with 91 ODIs for Pakistan. The statistics he has are as impressive as 83 wickets in Test matches, 120 in ODIs, and 34 in T20Is.
His new role as supervisor and mentor for the ICC Champions Trophy is testimony to the confidence of PCB management in his leadership acumen and in-depth knowledge of the game. It reflects the board’s strategy in using the talent of former cricketers to usher in fresh talent into the teams of the future.
As the ICC goes ahead with the preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy, new chair Riaz will add more experience and knowledge to Pakistan’s cricketing in the international arena.
