The Chicago White Sox, on the heels of one of its historically toughest seasons, introduce an associate manager of the previous Texas Rangers to be its latest manager during a rebuilding effort. The 42-year-old alum of the former MLB player turned coach appears to be the kind of help the team needs.

Having played nine seasons as an outfielder in the MLB, primarily with the San Diego Padres, Venable moved into coaching positions with the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and more recently with the Texas Rangers as associate manager to Bruce Bochy. In the 2023 World Series with the Rangers, Venable was a member of the team that helped bring a championship back to Texas.

After what had occurred at White Sox camp, which won a then-franchise-record-low of 41 with a woeful 121 losses to set the bad record across the MLB during the last season, coming in, this was also coming from some pretty turbulent experience in an otherwise quite normal baseball operation.Venable was the first managerial hire by Getz from a very strong candidate list that had Cleveland Guardians coach Craig Albernaz and former interim manager Grady Sizemore.

The task before him would be a mountainous one for it was the team with the worst ranking in all aspects including runs scored, defensive metric, and performance by the bullpen this season. Still, despite poor resources in his tenure so far, owner Jerry Reinsdorf’s experience and good interpersonal skills within the clubhouse can suggest that Venable will play a steady role for the White Sox.
