PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah reiterated the critical need for dialogue between Pakistan’s government and opposition in a session of the National Assembly on Tuesday. He invited PTI to participate formally in political talks.
Sanaullah drew attention to the strained relations between PTI and the government since Imran Khan’s arrest last year. He remembered Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s previous attempt to establish a dialogue with the opposition, which failed miserably and he regretted: “This system cannot function unless the government and opposition engage in meaningful dialogue,” he remarked.
PML-N leader criticized PTI for its aggressive approach, which was targeting the violent protest against six deaths on November 24. He regretted that despite multiple efforts on the part of the government to facilitate talks, PTI never showed cooperation.
Ali Muhammad Khan of PTI while answering, appreciated Sanaullah’s statement that six lost their lives during the protests. However, he reiterated PTI’s demand for justice, particularly for those who died during the November demonstrations. “Our demand is simple — justice for the blood spilled,” Ali Muhammad stated.
Meanwhile, PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat suggested setting clear Terms of Reference (TORs) for negotiations. He urged the government to abandon its “arrogance” and take the initiative.
Sanaullah concluded by stressing the importance of mutual regret over losses and a willingness to move forward for Pakistan’s stability. Both sides agreed that dialogue is the only path to resolving the nation’s political deadlock.
This renewed call for discussions is a harbinger of reconciliation, although this is not yet at all times when political tensions have run so high.
