Legendary saltwater crocodile Dundee Star Burt made famous as a star of the 1986 movie Crocodile Dundee, died at 90 years of age. The colossal reptile, 5 meters plus in length and weighing an estimated 700kg, died at the Darwin-based Crocosaurus Cove where he lived since 2008.
Captured in the 1980s from the Reynolds River, Burt became one of the most recognized crocodiles in the world. His appearance in Crocodile Dundee with Paul Hogan helped cement his status as an icon for Australia’s rugged wilderness and wildlife. He was feisty about his temperament and independent nature, which earned him much love from his carers, as well as visitors to the zoo.
Crocosaurus Cove, where Burt had spent the last 16 years, confirmed his death yesterday. In a fitting tribute to the creature, the wildlife park described Burt as being the “force of nature” with the untamed spirit that his species embodied. In addition, his amazing existence was also celebrated because his furious attitude and huge size gained him thousands of viewers witnessing him up close, during feeding time, of course.
Minister for Parks and Wildlife Marie-Clare Boothby said she was sad about the loss, considering Burt a “true icon of the Territory.” His death will be “deeply felt across Australia.”
To pay him homage, Crocosaurus Cove is proposing to install an honorable commemorative plaque upon the attraction.
The final death knell of Burt sounded at the wildlife park, the end of an era where the world was left in its memory with the most treasured capture of the heart-tugging crocodile. He lived a life full of strength, resilience, and a very untamed spirit, one that will live on never to be forgotten.
