Shanghai Masters Tennis Tournament

Taylor Fritz was number seven worldwide and was on the way to a great day at the Shanghai Masters on Friday. He easily swept his opponent in the quarter-finals, David Goffin of Belgium, without dropping a single set and moved on to the semis. The 26-year-old American defeated the 66th-ranked player in the world with quite an impressive performance as he won 6-3, 6-4.

Fritz dominated from the start of the match, breaking Goffin’s service in the second and sixth games of the first set. He dominated the rhythm and never let his opponent, who had surprisingly defeated the second seed Alexander Zverev in the previous round, settle into the match with powerful serves and precise groundstrokes.

A fleeting glance at Goffin’s prowess and resilience that could have helped him in the match against Zverev came in the second set. He played much more aggressively and put up a much better fight, though Fritz’s consistency and mental strength were too much for the Belgian to surmount with his late attempt at replaying the first-round upset against another of the top-10 players.

Looking back at the match, Fritz said that he is really pleased with the level of play and admitted Goffin is a tough returner. “I’m really happy how I played,” Fritz said. “He’s such an incredible returner, so I had to stay extremely focused, even more than usual, on my service games.” It was this control and concentrated focus on each and every point that, in the end, gave him victory.

This is the first time Fritz has gone past the third round in Shanghai, and it marks a career milestone. He’s been steady and consistent, really growing on the ATP tour. His form has been impressive lately, taking his runner-up finish at the US Open and turning it into a serious step toward being a future Grand Slam contender.

Fritz’s road to the Shanghai Masters final was not without hiccups though. He will have to wait for the winner of the battle between world number one Novak Djokovic and promising Czech teen Jakub Mensik. Djokovic is a seasoned veteran with multiple Grand Slam titles and never a walkover whereas Mensik is the new breed that will want to cement his place on the biggest stage of them all. It’s going to be a great test for Fritz against someone who is making strides, and if he is to book his ticket to the final, then he has to be at his best.

The match also holds great importance for ranking points as well as building up Fritz’s confidence as he enters the second half of the tennis season. With the momentum on Fritz’s side, he really has a shot to take the title in Shanghai and further enhance his position on the ATP ranking.

Tomas Machac, another Czech, in one of the largest upsets, saw off four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, underlining the predictability of the tournament.

The Shanghai Masters did not shy away from many giant Killings, as the top seeds had fallen earlier than their expectations. And, so opened the draw for some lads like Fritz and Machac to have a golden opportunity at making deep runs in this tournament. Things are indeed heating up as we head into the final stages, and fans around the world eagerly await the conclusion of this great event.

Fritz is now well-established as a Shanghai threat. His goal would be to keep up the form and capitalize on this good fortune. One would see a huge leap in his career towards such a run in the semi-finals, sending him higher in the ATP rankings. As Fritz prepares for the next match, he will surely draw confidence from his recent performances and knowledge that he truly has what it takes to compete with the best in the world.

The semifinal clash, against either Djokovic or Mensik, will certainly hold in store some thrilling encounters against Fritz’s skill, endurance, and mental strength.
