X, the social media site, is claimed to be testing the rollout of its AI chatbot Grok to free users, which may boost its user base and enhance feedback cycles. It was at first available only to premium subscribers but has now been rolled out to certain users in some regions, New Zealand included.

Initially, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI was available only for paying users and introduced features such as image generation and analysis, powered by the FLUX.1 model. Researchers and users began noticing early in the weekend that it was now free, and TechCrunch confirmed that X is testing this feature with restrictions in New Zealand.

Free users can now access Grok but under limited capacity. The user can make as many as 10 queries per two hours on the Grok-2 model and 20 queries with the Grok-2 mini model and three image analysis queries per day. Free versions are available for accounts older than seven days and valid phone numbers associated.

This step generally outlines xAI’s approach to acquire more users and accelerate the company’s pace of its own AI technology development. Making Grok free for the free users will help the company collect much more feedback in areas that will possibly make it even more competitive in the AI space competing with other models that are already widely used, like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
