Chuck Woolery, the much-beloved game show host and television personality, passed away at age 83. His co-host, Dr. Mark Young, confirmed the news on social media, sharing heartfelt condolences. “It is with a broken heart that I tell you my dear brother @chuckwoolery has just passed away. Life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote on X (formerly Twitter), a message later shared on Woolery’s account.
Woolery, according to reports, fell ill at his home in Texas as Young was there. Woolery complained of breath troubles, and his representatives called emergency services, but Woolery couldn’t be revived in time.
A trailblazer in the television game show genre, Woolery hosted the initial iteration of Wheel of Fortune (1975–1981) before branching out to other programs. He hosted other then-iconic programs: Love Connection (1983–1994), Scrabble (1984–1990), and Lingo (2002–2007). His pulchritudinous presence and distinctive delivery made him a household figure cut across generations of TV audiences.
Also known as the original Survivor host, Woolery served in the U.S. Navy and had been in the music world, even when he was part of the Avant-Garde duo, which had a single charting Top 40 hit entitled Naturally Stoned. His TV career includes advertising jingle contributions. He also ventured into acting with appearances in the movie Cold Feet and several TV sitcoms, including 227 and Scrubs.
