Kai Cenat‘s recent invite to the Mafiathon 2 live stream of R&B artist Chris Brown prompted heated debate online. The event that would break the all-time Twitch subscriber record in a month has featured A-list guests, from Snoop Dogg to Lil Uzi Vert and even Miranda Cosgrove. Then, on November 21, Chris Brown joined Cenat’s stream, impressing the viewers with his backflips, basketball games, and performances of his hit songs. However, some fans were not impressed with Cenat’s decision as Brown has a checkered past for domestic violence allegations.
Social media reactions were mixed. Fans praised Cenat for having a high-profile guest, with one saying that he’s “the GOAT for bringing Chris Brown on stream.” Detractors, however, lambasted the streamer as putting ratings over ethics, with one asking, “Did Kai forget Chris is a woman beater?”
After the outcry, Cenat took down his announcing tweet about Brown but allowed clips of his live stream to remain on his YouTube page, which has more than 13 million subscribers. He hasn’t commented publicly.
Criticism aside, Mafiathon 2 has solidified Cenat’s place among the leaders of the biggest Twitch stars. In November, he became the most-subscribed streamer in the site’s history, pulling millions into the largely unpredictable celebrity-studded streams.
It isn’t the first time his choice of guests has made headlines. Earlier in the event, he welcomed rapper DDG and DDG’s son, Halo. In June, Cenat again trended after hosting comedians Kevin Hart and Druski for his live stream. This show would go on to break Twitch viewership records.
Fans and critics alike will be keeping an eye on how the streamer manages the entertainment versus controversy balance as Cenat continues to get high-profile guests.
