President-elect Donald Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last Friday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The meeting lasted three hours, discussing some of the most pressing issues such as tariffs, border security, and trade deficits. This was after a threat by Trump to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods following concerns over drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

According to reports, although the discussions were courteous, Trump was quite forthright while pointing out the grievances that the U.S. had with Canada. He complained about the failure of Canada to stop illegal crossings and drug trafficking. He also pointed out the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, which he claimed ran over $100 billion.

At one point, Trump humorously quipped that Canada might consider becoming the 51st state if it couldn’t meet the United States’ demands. That remark drew nervous laughter but highlighted the gravity of the expectations that Trump had placed upon reform.

Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman said that over dinner, he made a point to highlight sharp contrasts between the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada border. She told him that illegal immigration via Canada into the U.S. is under 1%. She said fentanyl seizures are equally low. According to her, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the security at its borders after investing new funds in technological and enforcement improvements.

The dinner was described as cordial despite the tense topics. Prominent U.S. officials and Canadian representatives attended, encouraging discussion on trade and security. According to reports, Trudeau pointed out that the trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada is mutually beneficial, as Canada is the top export destination for 36 states and an essential supplier of energy and minerals.

While no resolutions were announced, both leaders called the meeting “productive,” signaling continued collaboration on key issues.
