Basketball Coach Lou Carnesecca

Hall of Fame basketball coach Lou Carnesecca, a legendary figure in college basketball, died on Saturday at the age of 99, just weeks short of his 100th birthday. St. John’s University confirmed that he had passed away in a hospital surrounded by his family.

Nicknamed “Looie, “Lou Carnesecca was a pillar of New York sports, coaching St. John’s University for 24 seasons. Under his tenure, he took the team to the NCAA tournament 18 times, enjoyed 18 seasons with at least 20 wins, and the 1985 Final Four. The coach put together a mark of 526-200 and had been three times the Big East Coach of the Year.

His charisma spread far beyond the court, earning him popularity with fans and players alike. His animated sideline presence and trademark sweaters made him a St. John’s basketball staple. He was a basketball great inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, which marked the same year of his retirement.

Born in East Harlem, Carnesecca attended Archbishop Molloy High School and then became an assistant coach at St. John’s. He eventually became head coach and, for a brief period, led the New York Nets of the ABA. Finally, in 1973, he returned to St. John’s to make history.

During his induction speech in the Hall of Fame, Lou Carnesecca praised his players: “I never scored a basket. The players did everything.”

He said Mike Tranghese, former Big East Commissioner, once called him “our soul and our conscience.” Former player Mark Jackson paid tribute on social media, calling him a “game changer” and expressing deep gratitude for his mentorship.

Lou Carnesecca is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary, and extended family. His memorial services will be announced later. He left an indelible mark on basketball and the St. John’s community; the legacy lives.
