The head of the Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto is going to send a private invitation to this ceremony for the inauguration by the elected President of the United States Donald Trump on 20 January 2025. The magic date will see several leading world figures, including Chinese President Xi Jinping in attendance at the US Capitol at Washington DC.
Bilawal Bhutto is expected to leave for Washington soon to attend the high-profile gathering. It would be an important follow-up in PPP’s relation with the US presidential inauguration events as co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari attended a similar pre-inauguration event in 2017 at the hands of Trump accompanied by late senator Rehman Malik and Sherry Rehman.
President-elect Trump won a decisive victory in the November 5 election, declaring an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” during a celebratory address in Florida. He will be sworn in as the 47th president, marking a return to office after a controversial first term that included a Capitol insurrection and subsequent legal challenges.
In the inauguration ceremony, there will be traditional events that include oaths of office by the vice president and the president, an inaugural address, and a pass-in-review military procession. President Joe Biden is anticipated to attend the event this year, reciprocating the tradition that Trump had skipped during the inauguration of Joe Biden in 2021.
Bilawal Bhutto’s visit to Washington has kickstarted activity from various Pakistani groups residing in the US. Reported statements claim PTI members would organize protests on the occasion while a few had approached for entry passes to other inaugural events on this day as well. That bodes in good stead regarding likely clashes from both PPP supporters and PTI.
It is ambiguous whether this invitation places him as an official representative of Pakistan or simply as the guest of an organizing body, but it symbolizes his continuation to uphold international relations importance within such internationally influential events.
