Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell was revealed as the Ice King during Miley Cyrus Night on The Masked Singer. In an emotional segment before his unmasking, Bell reflected on his tumultuous year and the healing power of sharing his truth.
A part of Bell’s journey included appearing in the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids’ TV. There, he shared his history of abuse during his childhood era of Drake & Josh. On the show, Bell noted the anxiety and regret that first followed his coming out but shared that the outpouring of support that ensued helped him move forward.
“The night when my story came out, I was frightened stiff,” Bell said. “But seeing how many people related lifted a weight off my shoulders. To all those who stand by me, thank you. Your support makes me feel like the sky is the limit.”
It was Miley Cyrus Night and during the performance, Bell was singing “Midnight Sky.” However, despite his soulful performance, he was kicked out of the show. The judges made all sorts of wild guesses, from Joe Jonas to Cole Sprouse, but only Jenny McCarthy got it right.
“I think it’s been a long road, but being here reminded me of why I became an entertainer—to bring joy to people’s lives. This has been a pleasure.”
Bell has been active and reconnecting with his fans through performances. His journey on Masked Singer may be over, but music and resilience resonate with all.
The 12th season of The Masked Singer has unmasked Bethany Hamilton, Natalie Imbruglia, and Laverne Cox, among others. Tune in every Wednesday at 8 p.m. on FOX.
