Firefighters fought strong winds to bring a rapidly moving brush fire under control Monday evening in Hemet, Riverside County.
The blaze, referred to as the Chambers Fire, started at approximately 6:10 p.m. near Chambers Street and Gilbert Street, said officials with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. By 7:30 p.m., crews halted the fire’s forward progress as it moved toward Domenigoni Parkway. The blaze burned a total of 119 acres.
Hemet Fire Department Captain Laura Axcell confirmed that no structures were damaged or destroyed, and one firefighter sustained a minor injury. Crews worked tirelessly, supported by fire engines and water tenders, to prevent the fire from threatening the nearby Seven Hills community.
A red flag warning had been issued for southern California because of strong winds and dry conditions. According to the National Weather Service, the winds ranged from 25 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph. Those factors have aided in the quick spread of the fire.
SkyCal captured ground crews and fire dozers battling flames in a remote area of Hemet. The initial effort involved five fire engines with more resources being added later.
The authorities haven’t established what may have caused the fire, which broke out on a day with another Santa Ana wind event. This sparked a “particularly dangerous situation” alert since fires were sorely needed in this region.
The fire is a reflection of how committed and quick the firefighters are to ensure that life and property risks are minimized. The incidences are a constant reminder of the threats of wildfires occurring due to extreme weather conditions in Southern California.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant during fire season and to follow updates from local fire departments and emergency services.
