Babar Azam has opted to step down as Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team skipper, which has opened the floodgates on who should take over from him as the skipper. According to a report on GEO Super, the PCB has three favorites for the job. The report says some interesting names popped up as hopefuls for the PCB.
The decision comes after Pakistan’s disappointing exit from T20 World Cup 2024, failing to make it to the next phase of the contest, as they lost matches to the USA and India within the group stage. Babar’s statement that he has decided to resign as the captain has raised a lot of speculations about the motives for his action and the prospects of further action on the leadership front.
In a statement released on the social media platform, Babar Azam shared his views regarding his resignation: “It has been my privilege to lead this team. However, it’s time for me to focus on my role as a player. I would like to look at improving performance, taking pleasure in batting, and more quality time with family, which gives me joy.”.
This is not the first time Babar has quit the captaincy. He resigned after Pakistan’s woefully dismal performance in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 but was restored as the white-ball skipper in March 2024. Even when he returned, however, there wasn’t much change for the better in the fortunes of the team.
Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Saud Shakeel, and Salman Agha are the probable contenders to become the new PCB captain, and Mohammad Rizwan is said to be the most likely candidate according to reports. According to reports, head coach Gary Kirsten is said to have some reservations about the appointment of Mohammad Rizwan as captain, as Mohammad Rizwan already holds the position of the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman across all formats, which would increase his workload.
