UK-based independent wrestling promotion North Wrestling has now successfully secured a spot on Freeview television and will be the first company to accomplish this. Several shows, including its popular Thunderstruck series, are airing on the Extreme Sports channel. According to Andrew Bowers, the owner of North Wrestling, this will be the biggest opportunity for British wrestling to reach new audiences.

In an interview recently, Bowers spoke with much enthusiasm about the new deal for promotion on Freeview. He called to note renewed interest in mainstream wrestling through WWE and AEW. He acknowledged that much hasn’t been done about recognizing the independent scene’s momentum yet but stated the move on Freeview is a step in the right direction. “This is a great start for us,” Bowers said, and all he wants is visibility. He said that the Freeview platform, it could open more avenues and further allow more opportunities toward greater access, especially giving more fans a chance to experience independent wrestling.

Bowers is confident that exposure through Extreme Sports will spill over into even greater mainstream appeal. He also praises the good nature of the channel team, “a rising tide lifts all ships,” referring to how success in one area may have positive ripple effects throughout the whole industry, perhaps bringing growth here may benefit all British wrestling industries by a greater attraction to local promotions.

North Wrestling, which began its life in 2016, has been steadily gaining momentum within the UK wrestling scene. The new Freeview deal should help push its newfound popularity toward even more fans and gain greater attention for the promotion while keeping to the main focus – that of ticket sales and events attended in person.
In this way, Bowers is full of hope and optimism in seeing if it leads to other chances at bringing British wrestling into mainstream attention.
