Pennsylvania is paying its respects and mourning the tragic loss of State Representative Matt Gergely after he died early Sunday morning of a medical emergency. The 46-year-old lawmaker in the 35th Legislative District of Allegheny County spent his life ensuring public service at its best was provided to constituents in McKeesport and the greater Mon Valley, sources said today.

Democratic and Republican leaders released heartfelt tributes. The Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus expressed, “Matt devoted his life to fighting for children and working families, especially in his hometown of McKeesport. He will be desperately missed in Harrisburg, and his passing is a tremendous loss to his community.

The Republican leadership echoed similar sentiments. “Matt’s commitment to his family and community is deeply felt among his peers,” they said. “He quickly earned respect across the aisle, and his voice will be missed in Harrisburg and southeast Allegheny County.

Lt. Governor Austin Davis also was paying tribute and said, “Representative Gergely dedicated his life to public service. From his roles as a McKeesport school official and city administrator to his time in the House, he championed working families in the Mon Valley.”

Elected to the House in 2023, Gergely was re-elected in 2024. Contributions during his stint included sponsoring legislature that protected plasma donations and, post-pandemic, the struggling local business. Known more for advocating powerful unions and superior education, admirers came forth from both ranks of colleagues as well as voters.

Gergely graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Leaving a bereaved family, friends, and a community that he served selflessly throughout his life, he will be remembered by them. His offices in McKeesport, Munhall, and Clairton will remain open to continue to serve the people that he has shown so much passion for.

The legacy of compassion and commitment Gergely built will forever be remembered within Pennsylvania’s political and community landscapes.
