Last Christmas by Wham! Managed something no other song has ever achieved: it breaks new ground by becoming the first song to take consecutive Christmas number-one titles in the UK charts. The Official Charts Company declares that on December 20, 2024, the 1984 hit written and produced by the late George Michael, topped the UK singles chart for a second year in succession.
This success has been dedicated to the fact that the song has its 40th year of creation. For this, an exclusive EP was recently produced to commemorate this milestone. This is in recognition of the age of the song; for this reason, it happened to be the most streamed and purchased song of that particular week.
The surviving Wham! Band member Andrew Ridgeley responded, expressing his happiness. He told the press: “George would have been utterly delighted. His fabulous Christmas composition has become as integral to the season as mince pies and turkey.” According to Ridgeley, the quality of Michael’s songwriting was what explained why this song “endures”, while it is true “people like this don’t wear off across the generations”.
It peaked at number one in 2021 for Christmas, ending the longest journey ever to that top spot after being infamously eclipsed by Band-Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? Back in 1984.
Such news and celebrations come on the bittersweet anniversary of George Michael passing on Christmas Day 2016, aged 53. As a musical genius, Michael’s work will forever be remembered for how it defines the holiday seasons for fans across the globe.
While Wham! is basking in the glory of a triumph, other festive hits like Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You have taken up their rightful place on the charts to ensure that festive sounds are always there to revive the spirit of the season.
