A fast-moving wildfire, known as the Sunset Fire, flared up late Wednesday within Runyon Canyon in the iconic Hollywood Hills. Spurred by dry foliage and gusty winds, this wildfire has burned over 50 acres so far, and evacuation orders have been issued to many surrounding neighborhoods.

CAL FIRE had sent more than 150 firefighters to the location. Ground troops to battle with adverse terrain will be accompanied by water drops by helicopters. Fire Captain Erik Scott had also encouraged citizens to evacuate the area as early as possible, adding, “If you see or smell smoke, don’t wait to be told—evacuate immediately.”

It is still not safe to go to most of the city’s popular attractions, such as the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign. The evacuation area runs from Mulholland Drive to Hollywood Boulevard and from the 101 Freeway to Laurel Canyon. Evacuees have been taken to the Pan Pacific Recreation Center and Hollywood High School, which have been converted into shelters.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as more than 7,500 firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed statewide to combat multiple wildfires triggered by intense Santa Ana winds. President Joe Biden also declared a Major Disaster, which unlocks federal resources to aid the affected communities.
Locals have described the fire as unprecedented in speed and intensity. “The devastation is overwhelming,” said Chris Groel, a resident of Pacific Palisades, whose workplace was destroyed. Now we must focus on rebuilding our community.”

Winds are expected to ease by Thursday morning, but the critical fire conditions remain. Authorities say the fire may continue spreading if the containment efforts are not successful. The residents are urged to follow official updates and prepare for a prolonged period of disruptions.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be given as information comes in.
