One more legal tussle for the cinemas, and this time between two of the icons of South Indian cinema. Nayanthara and Dhanush are in a war, and this battle is over a three-second clip from the documentary film Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, streaming on Netflix on November 18.
Dhanush, who made the Tamil film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in 2015, sought damages of ₹10 crore, claiming that parts of the film were used without permission in the documentary. To this, she wrote a public open letter that virtually tore apart the reasons for such an exorbitant amount over a short clip.
The Dhanush Nayanthara Documentary-Professional and Personal-chalks one-to-one different needs a bit of time because he hasn’t permitted certain shots. According to Nayanthara, her team approached the producers several times requesting the inclusion of songs or visuals from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan but dropped it when Dhanush refused permission.
Superseding it as an “all-time low”, Nayanthara criticized Dhanush for what she said was an ego-driven attempt to undermine her project. She pointed out that it is footage that was captured on personal devices and already in public circulation. “This speaks volumes about your character,” Nayanthara said, adding that she plans to respond through lawful means.
The controversy has also brought in comments from Nayanthara’s husband and filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, who directed Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Shivan posted a past video of Dhanush speaking of the importance of positivity with a seemingly stern word on behalf of contradiction.
With this close-to-the-heart debate leading up to the release of the documentary, the people wait for Dhanush’s take on these allegations. This high-profile battle highlights, apart from the intricacies of intellectual property in the entertainment world, personal rivalry as well.
The documentary will give the viewer an intimate peep at Nayanthara’s life but the controversy is something that will make sure it stays in the focus even after the content fades away.
